Nature’s Contribution · west of the stile · by the wetland
On the night round
All Needs Met
A wildlife sanctuary: a preserve left to whatever was here first, and a home for good for animals who are disabled or were abandoned.
It is after dark, and the keepers are doing their round. They do not carry a torch, because a torch wakes everybody, so they carry a viewer that sees warmth instead, and this is what it shows: every resident white with their own warmth, the cold night black around them, and nothing in the picture with a colour, because heat has none. All needs met is what the picture means. Somebody fed and sheltered and settled is warm, and you can see it from across the yard without waking them.
Through the viewer
In words: the sky and the wetland are black. Reeds stand round the water a shade lighter, a heron is white in the shallows, bats are small white shapes over the water and a muskrat is a white smudge on the bank. At the trees behind, a deer stands white at the edge. In the yard, Duke the duck is by the pond, two hens are close together, Juniper the goat has her head down on three legs, Clover the rabbit sits with her head on one side, Hollis the dog lies facing the barn, Mabel the pig is a big white shape near the fence, and Bramble the sheep stands beyond her. The barn’s doorway glows, Otis the owl is white on his perch inside the wire of his mews, and the keepers’ hut has a bright window.
Who lives here
Everybody in the yard came here because somewhere else would not keep them, and they live here for good. Nobody here is brave, or sad, or a lesson for anybody: they are a goat, a hen, a dog and the rest, getting on with it. What follows is how each one came, how they get about, and what they like, and it is all ours: they are this story’s animals, not anybody’s real ones.
-
Juniper
A goat.
Came from a farm that would not keep a goat with three legs. Gets about on three legs, and she is the first to the hay every morning. Likes the bale by the barn door, which nobody else gets.
-
Pip
A hen.
Came with a crate of hens nobody wanted any more. Gets about without seeing: she knows the run by the wire under her feet and by the other hens' voices. Likes the same dust bath in the same corner every afternoon.
-
Hollis
A dog.
Came after somebody left him at the side of a road. Gets about without hearing: he watches, and the keepers talk to him with their hands. Likes lying where he can see the door.
-
Mabel
A pig.
Came from a family who were told she would stay small, and she did not. Gets about wherever she likes, slowly. Likes the wallow, and having her back scratched with a broom.
-
Otis
A great horned owl.
Came with a wing that healed the wrong way after he flew into a fence, so he cannot go back to the wild. Gets about by hopping and climbing, and by gliding from his high perch to the floor of his mews. Likes being left alone in the daytime.
-
Bramble
A sheep.
Came from a flock that was being split up, with one eye. Gets about keeping the rest of the flock on the side she can see. Likes having her chin scratched, and nothing else touched.
-
Clover
A rabbit.
Came after she was let loose in a park in the spring. Gets about with her head on one side, which is how she has always held it. Likes a cardboard box with two doors.
-
Duke
A duck.
Came from a pond where the others would not let him on the bank. Gets about with a wobble on land, and dead straight on the water. Likes the shallow end of the pond, and Pip.
The preserve
Past the yard the wetland is left to whatever was here first. There is no path into it and nobody goes in: you look from the edge of the yard. Some of the neighbours, and when you might see them from there:
- Great blue herons, standing in the shallows at dawn and dusk.
- Red-winged blackbirds, on the reeds all spring.
- Chorus frogs, calling from the wetland after rain.
- Muskrats, in and out of the bank at night.
- Mule deer, at the edge of the trees at first light.
- Coyotes, passing through, and not stopping.
- Little brown bats, over the water on summer evenings.
- Dragonflies, over the shallows in the heat of the day.
Plain names only, and nothing here tells you how to find or tell any of them apart. This is their home, not a field guide.
What the sanctuary gives
- Connection
- You can come and sit in the yard. Anybody who wants to come to you will, and anybody who does not is not called over.
- Conservation
- The preserve is left to whatever was here first. There is no path through it: you look from the edge of the yard, and the wetland gets on with being a wetland.
- Education
- The keepers will tell you about anybody here, if you ask, and the screen in their hut has a month of films from people who look after animals and the wild all over the world.
- Manure
- Composted behind the barn, and carted to the cannabis farm's beds and the chaos gardens. It is the only thing that ever leaves.
The screen in the keepers’ hut
The keepers keep a month of films up in their hut from people who look after animals and the wild, Ryan’s list of channels: a sanctuary, nature series, conservation and rewilding projects, and somebody who explains animals very seriously and very funnily. The rack under the screen is refilled every morning with what each of them put up in the last month, and the oldest go off the end. Nobody here watched them first. The titles are the channels’ own, as they wrote them, some of them louder about danger and bites than anything in this yard, and none of the channels is ours or affiliated with Stimpunks. Every film plays where it hangs or goes up on the screen, nothing loads from YouTube until you press play, and every button says how long the film runs before you press it.
The screen in the keepers’ hut. Nothing is on it. Any film on the rack can go up here with the button under it, and nothing loads until you press one.
The rack was last filled at 6:28 pm on Sunday 11 October, Mountain time, with what each channel put up since Friday 11 September.
A month of their films, newest first under each channel

House rules
- No torch after dark. The viewer sees warmth, and nobody is woken by it.
- Nobody is called over. Anybody who wants to come to you will.
- Nobody leaves. No resident is sold, bred or eaten, and the manure is the only thing that goes out of the gate.
- Nobody is counted. There is no tally of animals saved on any wall here, and there is not going to be.
- Nothing in here moves, at any setting, and the screen plays only what you press.
Job marker — a feather Otis dropped, on the floor
You have found a job marker. The Adventurer’s Guild is a shopfront on the street, and it posts jobs that send you round these rooms. Take the code below to its board and that job is done. Nothing here is scored, nothing expires, and one is a perfectly good number of jobs to do.
The job: How do the keepers see in the dark?
Before the code: The keepers carry no torch on the night round. What does their viewer see instead of light?
Hint 1
It is in the first paragraph under the name.
Hint 2
It is why nothing in the picture has a colour.
Last hint
Not light at all.
Give me the answer
The answer is Warmth. Warmth: it sees heat instead of light, so every resident is white with their own warmth and nobody is woken.
Taking the answer is a real way through this, not a lesser one. Nothing is watching and nothing is written down.
Quest code: WARMTH
That is the one.
Warmth: it sees heat instead of light, so every resident is white with their own warmth and nobody is woken.
Quest code: WARMTH
HOW LOUD DO YOU WANT IT?
Starts wherever your device says. Nothing moves, flashes, or plays until you say so — and on the night round, nothing moves even then.
