Turning 04, and you cannot hear it from the road
Dance, Punks
A silent disco on the old airstrip. Three channels, one crate, a headset each, and the volume in your own hand.
The quietest thing on this road is also the biggest crowd on it. Out past the last streetlight there is an airstrip nobody lands on any more, long and flat and wide enough for everybody, and on it a great many people are dancing to three different things at once without a sound reaching the verge. From the road you see a field of small coloured lights bobbing about in the dark. That is the whole party, and it is lit by the headsets and nothing else.
The loudest room you can turn down
A silent disco hands everybody their own music, on their own headset, at their own volume. The dancefloor is still a crowd — you can see everybody, move with everybody, be right in the middle of it — but the sound only goes where somebody asked for it. Take the headset off and the runway is quiet: tarmac, somebody laughing, the wind. Nobody on this airstrip can make anybody else’s night louder.
That is the dial this whole street runs on, built as a venue. Everywhere else here, how loud it gets is something the visitor holds rather than a property of the page. Out here it is something the dancer holds rather than a property of the room. A loud room is an access barrier, as Club Chronic says about itself on the street, and a silent disco is one of the ways a crowd gets round that without anybody having to leave it.
Some of us dance to the same song forty times in a row — stim listening, one song or one list over and over, which is what our playlists are for. And some of us move because joy has to go somewhere. Our Autistic Joy entry quotes Authentically Emily on what it can feel like, and one line on that list is needing to move and stim to release the feeling
. A runway is a lot of room to release it in.
Put a headset on
Three channels, and they are one crate started in three places. The crate is Dance, Punks, a playlist Stimpunks keeps on YouTube. Each channel opens on a different song in it and plays on in order from there. A real silent disco has a DJ on every channel; this one has a starting point on every channel, and the room would rather say so than borrow a word for something it is not doing. It is not shuffle either. The player has no such button.
Nothing is fetched until you put the headset on. While it is off, choosing a channel only changes the colour of the band and what the headset says it will open on — you can try all three without a single request leaving this page. Once it is on, changing channel changes the music, because by then you have asked for a headset. No channel says how long it runs, because the crate is a list we keep adding to and today’s total would be wrong next week. It runs until you take the headset off, and the volume is on the player, where nobody else can reach it.
THE HEADSET IS OFF
-
CH 1 · Blue
Opens on Daft Punk Is Playing at My House by LCD Soundsystem, and plays on through the crate from there.
The top of the crate, where the playlist itself begins. A song about a party that got out of hand, which is the one kind of party this runway cannot have: nobody here can hear anybody else's music.
-
CH 2 · Orange
Opens on Wild Child by Shopping, and plays on through the crate from there.
About a third of the way down the crate. Somebody on the Blue channel will not reach this song until they have danced through everything above it, and nobody on this channel has to.
-
CH 3 · White
Opens on Starstruck by Sorry, and plays on through the crate from there.
About two thirds of the way down, and the palest headset on the runway, which makes it the easiest one to find across a dark field. That is a perfectly good reason to be on it.
The rules on the runway
- Nothing strobes, flashes or pulses, at any dial setting. No lasers, no smoke, no mirrorball swinging a beam across anybody’s eyes. The headsets glow steadily or not at all. A dancefloor is the room on this road most likely to grow a light show, and a light that can put somebody on the floor has no business at a party anybody is meant to enjoy — the punk club on the street settled that first.
- The channels are told apart by more than their colour. Every headset says its number and its name, and the three colours are at least 1.5 to 1 apart in brightness from each other, so they stay three different headsets in greyscale and to anybody who does not see those colours as different. That bar is ours rather than a standard’s, and
make-dance-punks.pyrefuses a channel under it. - Take the headset off whenever you like. The runway is quiet underneath the music, and standing in a silent crowd watching everybody dance is a perfectly good way to be at this party.
- Nobody has to dance. Sit on the tarmac, lie on it and look up, walk the centre line out to the far end and back. There are no seats because there is nowhere you are supposed to be.
- Nothing is counted. Not songs heard, not time on the floor, not which channel is most popular. Nobody is keeping a list of who danced.
- Come on your own. Most of the crowd did. That is what a crowd on different channels looks like from the road.
Whose this all is
The crate is ours and the music is not. Dance, Punks is a playlist Stimpunks Foundation keeps on YouTube, read off its own page on 2026-09-23. Every song on it belongs to the people who made it and is on somebody else’s channel. Nothing is hosted by us, and none of those artists, their labels or the channels carrying them is affiliated with Stimpunks or endorses us. The three opening songs, who made them and whose channel each is on, are in the liner notes.
The airstrip is invented. Silent discos are not, and neither are the headsets that glow the colour of the channel they are on.
Job marker — a glow stick snapped and dropped on the runway
You have found a job marker. The Adventurer’s Guild is a shopfront on the street, and it posts jobs that send you round these rooms. Take the code below to its board and that job is done. Nothing here is scored, nothing expires, and one is a perfectly good number of jobs to do.
The job: Who holds the volume
Before the code: At Dance, Punks nobody can make anybody else's night louder. Who holds the volume?
Hint 1
It is not the DJ. There is not one.
Hint 2
It is whoever has the headset on.
Last hint
The room says loudness is something this person holds rather than a property of the room.
Give me the answer
The answer is The dancer. The dancer. A silent disco hands everybody their own music, on their own headset, at their own volume, so the crowd is still a crowd and the sound only goes where somebody asked for it. That is the dial this whole street runs on, built as a venue: out there, how loud it gets is something the dancer holds rather than a property of the room.
Taking the answer is a real way through this, not a lesser one. Nothing is watching and nothing is written down.
