on the street · through the fire door · a lamp on every landing, all the way up
A step each, all of us, all the way up
Count Me In
Put the next number, or take the lift
We are on step…
Reading the stair needs scripts.
By the lift
It takes you up one step, with no number to get wrong, and it counts exactly the same. Nothing says which way anybody came up.
Climbing takes a CB handle and the community password: sign on at the Community Center, then come back. Reading the stair takes nothing.
This is the stairwell of a public building, and it goes up and never stops. Everybody climbs it together, a number to a step: whoever comes through the door puts the next number, and then somebody else puts the one after. There is a chairlift on the wall, so anybody can take the next step without the number, and a step by the lift is a step. It is after the counting game in our Discord’s Collaborative Nonsense channels.
How the stair works
- One step at a time, and never two in a row. Once you have taken a step, by number or by lift, the next one is somebody else’s. After theirs you can go again.
- A number that skips ahead sends the stair back to one. That is the game, and anybody’s number can slip, so the stair never says whose it was: it says where it had got to, and starts again. A number at or below the step we are on is somebody whose page was behind, and it sends nobody anywhere.
- The lift never sends anybody back. It asks the stair for the next step and takes it. It is there so that nobody has to do sums, type, or trust their eyes on a number to join in, and we are a Disabled people’s organisation, so the stair was never going to have one way up.
- The stair remembers the highest step it has reached, and that belongs to nobody. It is not anybody’s score and nobody’s fault when a climb goes back to one; it is how high we have been.
- Nobody is counted. The stair keeps the step it is on, the highest it has reached, where it last went back to one, and a scrambled mark of whoever took the last step so they cannot take the next, which the next step replaces. Nothing says who took any step or how many anybody took. What the stair keeps.
- Nothing moves, at any setting. The chair is drawn at the landing we are on.
The game
The game is our community’s own, from the Collaborative Nonsense channels in our Discord, where a number goes up one message at a time. The stairwell, the lift and the lamp are drawn for this room. It is set in Allerta Stencil, by Matt McInerney, and Hind, by the Indian Type Foundry, and credited in the liner notes.
Job marker — the stairlift's call button, a small box on the wall at the foot of the stairs
You have found a job marker. The Adventurer’s Guild is a shopfront on the street, and it posts jobs that send you round these rooms. Take the code below to its board and that job is done. Nothing here is scored, nothing expires, and one is a perfectly good number of jobs to do.
The job: How far does the lift take you?
Before the code: How many steps does one ride on the lift take you up?
Hint 1
It is in the box that says By the lift.
Hint 2
It is the same as one number.
Last hint
A single step.
Give me the answer
The answer is One. The lift takes you up one step, the same as putting the next number, and it counts exactly the same. It never sends the stair back to one.
Taking the answer is a real way through this, not a lesser one. Nothing is watching and nothing is written down.

HOW LOUD DO YOU WANT IT?
Starts wherever your device says. Nothing moves, flashes, or plays until you say so.
