room 04 // state: unmeasured
HEAR QUEER HERE
Two accounts of the same refusal: that things are fixed, bounded, and settled in advance of their relations.
“Indeed, causality is an altogether queer matter.”Karen Barad, Nature’s Queer Performativity, Kvinder, Køn & Forskning nr. 1–2 (2012), 25–53. Quoted in our own glossary, with the citation, because a wild room is not an excuse for a loose one.
“We are not broken objects. We are relations, all of us still becoming.”Helen Edgar, We Are Made of Relations, More Realms. Hers, not ours — credited to her by name, the way every room credits what it did not write.
> the instrument decides what it can see,
> then reports it as the whole truth.
A description of the diagnostic encounter as much as the laboratory one.
THE SUPERPOSITION PANEL
This is the room where the site argues with itself on purpose. Both readings render at once, and you choose which to collapse — or leave them both running, which is a real answer rather than a decline.
Each button has a passage below it, in the readings, because “hear” is doing real work in this room’s name. Pressing a button here highlights its passage. It never starts audio.
HOW LOUD DO YOU WANT IT?
Starts wherever your device says. Nothing moves, flashes, or plays until you say so.
THE READINGS
Monotropism
5 passages, written for this room and read by Ryan Boren. the glossary entry. 5 of 5 recorded.
What monotropism is
Monotropism is a theory of Autistic attention, made by Autistic people — Dinah Murray, Wenn Lawson and Mike Lesser. The short version: attention is a resource, and some of us spend it deeply on a few things rather than thinly across many. That is the whole claim. Most of what gets said about us follows from it.
The A side: what the instrument reports
This is the A side. What follows is not our description. It is the one the clinic writes down. Restricted interests. Preoccupation. Poor attention switching. Rigidity. Resistance to transition. Failure to respond to name. Every one of those is a real observation. Every one is also a measurement, reported as though it were a property of the person rather than a property of the instrument.
The B side: the same wall
This is the B side. Same person, same afternoon, different instrument. Attention pulled hard toward a few things, with not much left over for the rest. Interruption is expensive, because leaving a tunnel costs more than staying in one. The name went unanswered because it arrived from outside the tunnel — not because it did not matter. Nothing in that list is a deficit. It is a description of where the attention went.
Both are measurements
Leave it open and you get both patterns at once, which is the honest picture. The two readings describe the same behaviour. They are not equally true. One of them knows it is a measurement. The other reports itself as the whole truth.
A love language
Listening to the monotropic people in your life infodump about their SpIns is a love language.
Developmental Pace
5 passages, cut from our own glossary entry and to be read by Helen Edgar. the glossary entry. 0 of 5 recorded.
What developmental pace is
Developmental pace is the rate at which a person arrives — at a skill, a concept, a capacity — and it varies enormously between people, and within one person across different domains.

The A side: what the ruler reports
Pace is ordinary variation. School treats it as a fixed background condition: children are grouped by birth date, taught the same content at the same time, and marked on the distance between where they are and where the timetable says they should be. That distance gets recorded against the child. So a single label — ahead, behind, at grade level — is a summary of a shape it cannot represent. It averages the peaks and the troughs into one number and then treats that number as the child.

The B side: not one number
Developmental pace is not a single dial set slow or fast for a whole person. It is uneven by domain — which is what a spiky profile describes. A pace is not a property a child was issued at birth and can be measured against. It emerges from a person meeting an environment — which means the environment is half of it, and the half we can actually change.

Both are measurements
“Behind” is information about the ruler, not about the learner.

What it is not
An argument against age-graded expectations sits one careless line away from reading as an argument for lower ones. It is not that.

WHY THIS IS NOT A METAPHOR
Quantum queering is not one field borrowing a little glamour from another. Barad makes the strong version of the claim: the queerness is not ours, projected onto matter. It is matter’s own. If queerness is in the nature of spacetimemattering, then it is not a deviation from the natural order — it is the natural order, and “acts against nature” becomes an incoherent charge.
Barad also names the reaction: panicked attempts to contain, tame, or normalize what will not stay contained. We know that reflex. It is the same one that built the behaviorist clinic and the compliance classroom, one scale down.
Job marker — a small detector
You have found a job marker. The Adventurer’s Guild is a shopfront on the street, and it posts jobs that send you round these rooms. Take the code below to its board and that job is done. Nothing here is scored, nothing expires, and one is a perfectly good number of jobs to do.
The job: Name the physicist
Before the code: The physicist this room quotes, whose work the whole argument is drawn from. Surname is enough.
Hint 1
The name is on the page, beside the words it belongs to.
Hint 2
A theoretical physicist and feminist theorist.
Last hint
The surname has five letters and begins with a B.
Give me the answer
The answer is Karen Barad. The room is built on Barad's agential realism: nothing is fixed, bounded or settled in advance of its relations. Every quotation in there is credited by name rather than folded into our we.
Taking the answer is a real way through this, not a lesser one. Nothing is watching and nothing is written down.
Quest code: FRINGE
That is the one.
