A cave in the woods

Luis’s Burrow

Luis’s: a cave dug in under the roots of an old tree, heaped with cushions and blankets, with fluffy animals curled up in it, a basket of fidgets, a coffee machine, a bookshelf and a telly in the corner.

The burrow is dug in under the roots of an old tree, so the roots come through the ceiling, and the only light is the wood: the round mouth looks out on it, bright green in the afternoon, and the daylight comes in and lies across the floor. Everything in here is soft. There is no chair and no table, only cushions and blankets, orange and apricot and moss green, heaped as deep as you like.

Whose this is

This is Luis’s. A burrow of his own on the campgrounds, a surprise from Helen Edgar, pitched in the wood at the edge of the field with the street still in reach down the path. Come in, take your shoes off, and sink into something.

The nest

Who curls up here

The wood’s fluffiest come in out of the weather and nobody minds. A fox is curled asleep on the orange blanket, nose under tail. Two rabbits sit together on the long cushion. An owl dozes on a root under the ceiling, and a dormouse is asleep in a fold of the green blanket. Nobody has to do anything, and they come and go as they please.

The coffee machine

HOW LOUD DO YOU WANT IT?

Starts wherever your device says. Nothing moves, flashes, or plays until you say so — and in this burrow, the fox breathes in its sleep only at MAX GLITTER, and a fidget squashes only when you press it, and never at Gentle.

On the ledge by the mouth, a coffee machine with a grinder on top, a shelf of beans in jars, and lots of cups hanging on hooks under it, no two alike. Help yourself. Pick a bean, grind it fresh, pour a cup, and take it back to the cushions: nothing is for sale in here and nobody is keeping a tally of cups. The beans come from all over, and each jar says where it grew, how it is roasted and how strong it is, one to ten, which is the burrow’s own scale and nobody’s standard. The tasting words are ours, the way a bag of beans describes itself.

The bookshelf

Along the left wall, above the moss, a shelf of books in four rows: politics, sociology, phenomenology and neurodiversity. Take one and sit with it. Every book has a way to borrow or read it, because a shelf is for reading and not for selling, and the line under each only says what it is.

The basket of fidgets

A basket on the blanket, full of things to squeeze, pop, pull and push, and nothing to do with any of them but that. Press one and it says what it did, where you pressed. Nobody is counting, nothing is kept, and nothing makes a sound.

The telly

The telly sits on a cushion in the corner with its aerials up. On it: five Frasier clips, and then the wood, animals running and playing in forests and a waterfall in one, to leave on. Each plays where it hangs on the rack, or goes up on the telly with the button under it. Every button says how long it runs before you press it, and nothing loads from YouTube until you do.

Down the pebble paths

The burrow is in the wood at the edge of the field, and a pebble path runs from its mouth back past the pond to the other pitches and to the street.

The neighbours on the campgrounds, from the pond, down a pebble path or up the cable car: David Gray-Hammond’s Emergent Future Worlds Meets Mountain Man at the summit, Helen Edgar’s Faery Yurt at pitch 01, Jess’s Bough House at pitch 05, Ryan Boren’s Solarpunk Hermitage at pitch 03 and Rowena’s Aerial Arbour at pitch 06. Go and visit.

Whose words these are

The brief is Helen Edgar’s, 2026-11-05: a surprise den for Luis, a cosy cave in the woods with fluffy animals and trees, in orange and green, with lots of cushions and blankets and a telly showing Frasier clips; and then, the same day, only the top five clips, some of animals running in forests, a waterfall, a basket of fidget stress toys to squeeze and play with, a coffee machine with lots of cups and freshly ground beans from around the world at a variety of intensities, free to help yourself to, and a bookshelf of politics, sociology, phenomenology and neurodiversity to take a book from and sit with. The name is Helen’s pick, and Luis’s to change.

Frasier (1993–2004) is Paramount’s, and every clip is on Paramount Plus’s own YouTube channel. The animal films are BBC Earth’s, on its own channel, and the waterfall is Nature Zilla’s. Nothing from any of them is copied here: each one plays only when pressed.

The name and the headings are set in Fuzzy Bubbles, by Robert Leuschke, and every word that is read in Nunito, by Vernon Adams, Cyreal and Jacques Le Bailly, both under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Job marker — a button come off one of the cushions, with a bit of its thread still through it

You have found a job marker. The Adventurer’s Guild is a shopfront on the street, and it posts jobs that send you round these rooms. Take the code below to its board and that job is done. Nothing here is scored, nothing expires, and one is a perfectly good number of jobs to do.

The job: What lets the light into the burrow?

Before the code: What lets the only light into Luis’s Burrow?

Hint 1

It is in the first paragraph under the drawing.

Hint 2

There is no lamp in here.

Last hint

Look at what the drawing looks out through.

Give me the answer

The answer is The round mouth. The round mouth: there is no lamp in the burrow, so the only light is the wood outside, coming in through the mouth and lying across the floor.

Taking the answer is a real way through this, not a lesser one. Nothing is watching and nothing is written down.
