A cat café
Pekoe and Purrs
Coffee, tea, tea sandwiches, and cats from the shelter, waiting to be adopted.
A café with a window at every height. Somebody cut them all to the size of a cat, from one down at the floor for watching feet go by to a round one up under the eaves, so every cat in here has a window of its own, and every window lays a small square of day on the wall beside it. The light in the room is all of those squares at once. The cats were found out on the street in the dark; in here every one of them can be seen whole, in daylight.
In the café
The cats are at Rescue A Cat, the shelter on the street. This room reads who is there each time it opens, and needs scripts to do it.
The café is wider than a phone: scroll the picture sideways to see all of it, or meet everybody from the list under it.

A cat
Adopt them at Rescue A Cat → Adopting happens at the shelter, by anybody signed on to the CB, and the café is never told who.
Who is in today
The cats
Every cat in here came from Rescue A Cat, the shelter on the street, and every one of them is waiting for a home. The café keeps no list of its own: each time it opens it reads the shelter’s, so a cat adopted this morning has already gone home, and a cat brought in an hour ago is already here, finding somewhere to sit.
Press a cat to meet them: their name, what they are like, where they were found and when they came in, all in the shelter’s own words. Adopting happens at the shelter. Every cat’s card has a link to that cat’s own card there, where anybody signed on to the CB can adopt them. The café is not told who adopted whom, and does not ask.
Where a cat goes is up to the cat. The shelter wrote down each cat’s mood when they came in, and that is all the café goes by: a cat who watches everything from the top of the cupboard stays up high, a cat who is only interested in food stays down on the floor and the chairs, where the crumbs are, a cat who went straight for a lap stays near the tables, and a cat who fell asleep before the door shut finds somewhere soft. Three legs, one eye, a kink in the tail: none of it decides where a cat may go. A cat with three legs gets to the top of the tree like anybody else.
You can pick a cat up and put them on your lap, unless they want to be left alone, which is allowed. The shelter wrote that down too, and the café keeps to it: those cats have no button for picking them up. Sit near them instead. One cat to a lap: picking up another means the first hops down and goes somewhere they like. Look down and you see your lap under the café’s blanket, which it lends to anybody with a cat on them, because claws, and your table with whatever you asked for from the menu.
At MAX GLITTER the cats wander about by themselves, now and then, one at a time, the way cats do. At Gentle and Regular they stay where they are until something moves them: wave the feather wand, roll the crinkle ball or put down a box, and whoever is interested goes after it. A cat who is asleep, or wants to be left alone, is not interested, which is allowed as well. The words say who went where at every setting; only the moving changes.
The telly
A telly hangs by the hatch, and the rack under it holds films from other cat cafés, most of them in Japan, picked by Ryan, in his order. Each one plays where it hangs, or goes up on the telly with the button under it. Nothing loads from YouTube until you press play, and every button says how long the film runs before you press it. The titles are the channels’ own, as they wrote them; none of the channels is ours or affiliated with Stimpunks.
The telly. Nothing is on it. Any film on the rack can go up here with the button under it, and nothing loads until you press one.

House rules
- Let the cats come to you. A cat who walks away has said no, and that is the end of it.
- A cat who would rather not be picked up is not picked up. The shelter wrote it down, and the café has no button for it.
- No cat sits on the hatch, and none goes into the kitchen. The food is made behind the wall, because cats and kitchens do not mix.
- Nothing in here makes a sound. The purring is the cats’ business.
- Nobody is counted: not the cats, not the cups, and not you.
What the café keeps
- Nothing about you. Your lap and your table live in this page and nowhere else, and are gone when you leave it. The café’s own script stores nothing in your browser and sends nothing anywhere: it reads the shelter’s list when it opens, and that is the only thing it asks for. A film on the telly loads from YouTube only when you press it.
- No list of cats of its own. Who is in the café is who is in the shelter, read fresh every time.
- Nothing about who adopted whom. That is between the shelter and the person, and the shelter keeps it under a scrambled name.
- Every item says what is in it before you ask for it, and every drink how much caffeine.
- Nothing moves by itself except at MAX GLITTER, and nothing flashes at any setting. Nothing plays until you press play, and every film says how long it runs first.
- Every mug is the same mug.
Whose it is
The brief is Ryan Boren’s, of 2026-10-04, and so is the name. The cats are Rescue A Cat’s, and they are drawn by the same file that draws them in the shelter and in the Profile of whoever adopts them, so a cat here looks exactly as it does there. What orange pekoe is was read on Wikipedia’s article on tea leaf grading, and what carries caffeine on the FDA’s page about it and Wikipedia’s on herbal tea, each on 2026-10-04; the allergen line is worked out by the same engine as Hey, Good Cookin’. The menu and every other word in the room were written for it. Set in Cherry Bomb One, by Satsuyako, and Gabarito, by Naipe Foundry (Leandro Assis, Álvaro Franca and Felipe Casaprima), both under the SIL Open Font License. Every source is in the liner notes.
Job marker — a felt mouse on a string, batted under the second table
You have found a job marker. The Adventurer’s Guild is a shopfront on the street, and it posts jobs that send you round these rooms. Take the code below to its board and that job is done. Nothing here is scored, nothing expires, and one is a perfectly good number of jobs to do.
The job: What is orange pekoe a grade of?
Before the code: Orange pekoe is not orange-flavoured. What is it a grade of?
Hint 1
It is on the menu, under Tea.
Hint 2
Read the note under the house tea.
Last hint
Two words: a colour, and what is in the pot.
Give me the answer
The answer is Black tea. Black tea: orange pekoe is a grade of it in the tea trade, whole leaves of a certain size, and the orange has nothing to do with the fruit.
Taking the answer is a real way through this, not a lesser one. Nothing is watching and nothing is written down.
Quest code: PEKOE
That is the one.
