The farm’s old dairy

The Dairy

A café where everything on the menu was grown on this land, and every part of every dish says which place grew it.

A dairy is tiled white to the ceiling so it can be washed down, with small windows set high to keep it cool, and the daylight that comes in through them goes round and round the glaze until it is everywhere at once and casts nothing. The only colours in the room are the band of green tile at hand height and the food. The steel pasteuriser is still here, on the counter, and still works: every drop of the goats’ and the sheep’s milk goes through it before it is poured, made into cheese or sent to the street.

Inside

In words: a room of small white tiles from floor to ceiling, with a band of green tiles at hand height running round it and two small windows high up. On the left, a steel counter with a steel pasteuriser on it, its round thermometer showing, a pipe out of its side, two milk churns and a round cheese. On the right, two tables, each with a plate of something orange and a glass of milk. Nothing in the room has a shadow.

The menu

Every dish says what is in it before you take it, then its allergens, worked out from those words by the same engine as Hey, Good Cookin’, and every drink says how much caffeine it has, by the same engine as Pekoe and Purrs. Then which places on the land grew it. Every milk and cheese in here is pasteurised, and the farm’s page says why.

Where it comes from

Everything the kitchen cooks with, by the place that grows it. The sanctuary is not on this list, and never will be: nothing leaves it but its manure.

Job marker — a milk churn, standing by the door

You have found a job marker. The Adventurer’s Guild is a shopfront on the street, and it posts jobs that send you round these rooms. Take the code below to its board and that job is done. Nothing here is scored, nothing expires, and one is a perfectly good number of jobs to do.

The job: What does the machine on the counter do?

Before the code: The steel machine on the dairy's counter still works. What does it do to every drop of the milk?

Hint 1

It is in the first paragraph under the name.

Hint 2

It is named after Louis Pasteur.

Last hint

Pasteur...

Give me the answer

The answer is It pasteurises it. It pasteurises it, heating the milk enough to kill the germs that make people ill: there is no raw milk on the land.

Taking the answer is a real way through this, not a lesser one. Nothing is watching and nothing is written down.

Quest code: PASTEURISER

HOW LOUD DO YOU WANT IT?

Starts wherever your device says. Nothing moves, flashes, or plays until you say so — and in the dairy, nothing moves even then.
