A dog park

The Run

An open field, a row of trees, a porch to sit on, and every dog from the shelter out for a run.

A field of grass with a row of trees along the back of it, a fence all round, and a covered porch on the near side with two swings, two rocking chairs and plush beds on the boards. It is a bright day with clouds going over, and each cloud’s shadow lies on the grass under it. The Run is painted in the colours a dog can see, which are blues and yellows and greys: there is no red here and no green, the grass is the yellow a dog sees it as, and the ball is blue.

Out on the Run

The dogs are at Rescue A Dog, the shelter on the street. The Run reads who is there each time it opens, and needs scripts to do it.

The Run is wider than a phone: scroll the picture sideways to see all of it, or meet everybody from the list under it.

The dogs

Every dog on the Run came from Rescue A Dog, the shelter on the street, and every one of them is waiting for a home. The Run keeps no list of its own: each time it opens it reads the shelter’s, so a dog adopted this morning has already gone home, and a dog brought in an hour ago is already out on the grass.

Where a dog goes is the shelter’s word for its mood, and nothing else. A dog who wagged the whole way in is out on the grass waiting for the ball; a dog who leans on everybody is on the porch, near the chairs; a dog who went straight for the radiator is flat out in a patch of sun; a dog who fell asleep before the door shut is on a bed, or in the shade. A dog with three legs gets to the far end of the field like anybody else. And a dog who wants to be left alone is left alone: nobody calls that dog over, and there is no button for it.

Press a dog to meet them: their name, what they are like, where they were found and when they came in, all in the shelter’s own words. Adopting happens at the shelter. Every dog’s card has a link to that dog’s own card there, where anybody signed on to the CB can adopt them, and the Run is not told who adopted whom.

Nobody gives a command on the Run. Nobody is told to sit, nobody is trained, and nobody is a good boy or a bad dog. A dog who brings the ball back is playing, and a dog who does not is also playing.

In a dog’s colours

Most people have three kinds of cone in the eye. Dogs have two, which is what Jay Neitz, Timothy Geist and Gerald Jacobs found in 1989, and it means a dog sees in blues and yellows and greys. In 2017 Marcello Siniscalchi and his colleagues tested dogs themselves rather than their eyes, and the dogs could not tell red from green. Stanley Coren’s account of what that looks like is that green, yellow and orange all come out yellowish, blue and violet come out blue, blue-green comes out grey, and red comes out a very dark brownish grey.

So everything the Run paints itself is a blue, a yellow or a grey, and the tool that builds the room reads every one of its colours to make sure. The grass is the yellow a dog sees it as. The sky is blue, which is one of the colours a dog has. The porch roof is slate and the boards are straw. The shadows are not blue: they are the grass’s own yellow, darker, because this is summer grass under clouds going over and not snow.

The dogs are the one thing on the Run not drawn in a dog’s colours. A dog here is the same dog it is at the shelter and in the Profile of whoever adopts them, drawn by the same file in its own coat, chocolate and golden and brindle and all.

The ball is blue, because on green grass a dog can find a blue ball and loses a red one. That is Marcello Siniscalchi’s own advice, given to Live Science when the 2017 paper came out, rather than something the paper tested, and we would rather say which it is.

And the commonest colour blindness in people is red-green, the same pair a dog cannot tell apart, so on the Run nobody who has it is missing anything the room has put there.

The treat tin

The tin on the porch is filled from the treat truck at the Truck Stop next door, out of the same list, so the two lots cannot disagree about what a dog is given. Shaking it brings the dogs who are only interested in food up onto the porch, hopefully.

Nothing in the tin is on the ASPCA’s list of people foods to keep from pets, and the tool that builds the Run reads every bag against that list: no chocolate, coffee or caffeine, no xylitol, no grapes or raisins, no onion, garlic or chives, no milk, no nuts, no avocado, no citrus, no salt to speak of, no yeast dough or alcohol, and nothing raw.

The porch

A covered porch along the clubhouse wall, out of the sun and out of the rain, with two swings and two rocking chairs on it and plush beds on the boards for whoever wants one. The one beside your rocking chair is kept for the dog you ask to come and sit with you; ask from a dog’s card. There is a water bowl on the boards and a trough out in the field.

The ramp is as wide as the steps, at the other end of the porch, and goes to the same grass.

The dog telly

A small television on the clubhouse wall, hung low, at about a dog’s eye level. It has nothing of its own on it. The rack holds Ryan’s pick of television made for dogs: dogs at daycare, dogs at play, a walk through the woods filmed from a dog’s height, and one channel that is live all day. A person is welcome to watch too.

Every film says how long it runs before you press it, and the live one says it runs until you close it. The titles are the channels’ own, quoted as they wrote them, and some of them say what a film will do for a dog; that is theirs to say, and nothing of ours on this page says it.

Next door

The Run is the first of the lots side by side where the buildings stop. Through the double gate on the far side of the field, one gate shut behind you before the next one opens, is the Truck Stop, where the trucks are, and the treat truck among them. Past that are the Green and the Pile.

What the Run keeps

Whose it is

The brief is Ryan Boren’s, of 2026-10-05, and so is the name. The dogs are Rescue A Dog’s, drawn by the same file that draws them there. What a dog sees was read in Neitz, Geist and Jacobs’ paper, in Siniscalchi and his colleagues’, and in Stanley Coren’s account of them; the blue ball is Siniscalchi’s, to Live Science; the list of foods to keep from a dog is the ASPCA’s. The films on the rack are their channels’, and Ryan’s pick. The type is Lilita One, by Juan Montoreano, and Mukta, by Ek Type, both under the SIL Open Font Licence. Every source is in the liner notes.

Job marker — a chewed blue ball, by the porch steps

You have found a job marker. The Adventurer’s Guild is a shopfront on the street, and it posts jobs that send you round these rooms. Take the code below to its board and that job is done. Nothing here is scored, nothing expires, and one is a perfectly good number of jobs to do.

The job: Why is the ball blue?

Before the code: What colour is the ball on the Run?

Hint 1

It is in the first paragraph under the name.

Hint 2

Dogs see in two colours.

Last hint

The other one is yellow.

Give me the answer

The answer is Blue. Blue: dogs see in blues and yellows, so on green grass a dog can find a blue ball and loses a red one, and the Run is painted in a dog's colours.

Taking the answer is a real way through this, not a lesser one. Nothing is watching and nothing is written down.

HOW LOUD DO YOU WANT IT?

Starts wherever your device says. Nothing moves, flashes, or plays until you say so — and on the Run, the dogs only wander off by themselves at MAX GLITTER.
