A woodland tea room

Brew and Stew

Herbal teas, soups and stews, and bread, in a cabin in the woods. Everything on the board is vegan.

A cabin at the edge of the trees, and nobody lit it. The light grows in the wood: a pale glow along the joints between the logs, in the moss on the sill and in the little mushrooms at the foot of the walls, enough to read by and never enough to throw a shadow. The stove is shut iron, so it gives the room its warmth and none of its light. There is no flame in here anywhere, and nothing in here moves, at any setting: you come in off a dark field into a room that is lit by itself, and sit down.

In the tea room

The board

Everything on the board is vegan, and every card says what is in it and which of the nine major food allergens the FDA names it has, and gluten. Every tea is a tisane, made from flowers, leaves, roots, seeds or fruit and none of the tea plant, so none of them has any caffeine. There is no honey, so every tea comes with maple syrup on the side.

Nothing on the board is a remedy. A cup of chamomile here is a cup of chamomile, and nothing on a card says what it will do for you. Nothing was picked in the wood either: the herbs come from the cottage garden and the jars on the shelf, and the mushrooms in the soup were grown on a farm. Everything is made at the one stove, so if an allergy is serious, say so there, and somebody will tell you what has been near what.

Herbal teas

Every tea is a pot for one, poured into a stoneware beaker, and every one is a tisane: flowers, leaves, roots, seeds or fruit, and none of the tea plant, so there is no caffeine in any of them. Maple syrup on the side, for anybody who sweetens.

To take to your table

On the shelf by the door: flowers, grasses and twigs, each in something to stand in. Take one to your table, and bring it back to the shelf when you go. Every one was grown in the cottage garden or dried from last year’s, and nothing in one was picked in the wood. Nothing in an arrangement is food.

The looking-glass

A looking-glass hangs by the window, and the rack under it holds other people’s woodland tea rooms and cottages, most of them ASMR, picked by Ryan, in his order. Each one plays where it hangs, or goes up in the looking-glass with the button under it. Nothing loads from YouTube until you press play, and every button says how long the film runs before you press it. The titles are the channels’ own, as they wrote them, and so is anything a title promises; none of the channels is ours or affiliated with Stimpunks.

What the tea room keeps

Whose it is

The brief is Ryan Boren’s, of 2026-10-04, and so is the name. What a tisane is was read on Wikipedia’s article on herbal tea on 2026-10-04; the allergen line is worked out by the same engine as Hey, Good Cookin’, and the caffeine line by the same engine as Pekoe and Purrs, whose look at your table this room shares. The menu, the arrangements and every other word in the room were written for it. Set in Macondo, by John Vargas Beltrán, and Livvic, by LV= and Jacques Le Bailly, both under the SIL Open Font License. Every source is in the liner notes.

Job marker — a wooden spoon, dropped by the stove

You have found a job marker. The Adventurer’s Guild is a shopfront on the street, and it posts jobs that send you round these rooms. Take the code below to its board and that job is done. Nothing here is scored, nothing expires, and one is a perfectly good number of jobs to do.

The job: Who lit the woodland tea room?

Before the code: Nobody lit this tea room. What gives it its light?

Hint 1

It is in the first paragraph under the name.

Hint 2

Not the stove: the stove is shut.

Last hint

Look at the joints between the logs.

Give me the answer

The answer is Its own wood. Its own wood: the light grows in the joints between the logs, in the moss and in the little mushrooms, and the stove is shut, so it gives warmth and no light.

Taking the answer is a real way through this, not a lesser one. Nothing is watching and nothing is written down.

HOW LOUD DO YOU WANT IT?

Starts wherever your device says. Nothing moves, flashes, or plays until you say so — and in this tea room, nothing moves even then.
