The brochure rack by the map

Excursions

Outings we take together, one brochure each: where we went, what to bring, and the way round on the night.

HOW LOUD DO YOU WANT IT?

Starts wherever your device says. Nothing moves, flashes, or plays until you say so.

The doors are locked and the overhead lights are off. The one light left on is the map of the area on the wall, lit from behind, its lakes and woods and orange routes glowing in the dark lobby. Beside it stands a wire rack of brochures, and every one of them is lit along the edge turned to the map and throws its shadow away from it. Take any of them. The newest is in the top pocket.

On the rack

Newest at the top. Every brochure opens onto its own page, made by whoever made it, in their own look: this room only keeps the rack.

    Retail Therapy

Made by Norah Hobbs, with Claude

A shop that sells nothing, open late for one sensory-friendly night: bring your cart, your wishlist and your cope and carry, or sit on the bench by the fountain and watch everybody else’s carts go by.

What an excursion is

An excursion is part room, part announcement and part run of show. It is somewhere to go for one gathering, with the room drawn round it; it says when and where and what to bring; and it carries the way round on the night, the questions in order and the ways out of every one of them. Everybody who comes can read the whole of it beforehand, so nothing on the night is a surprise.

After the night it stays on the rack, as a record of where we went, so anybody who could not come can take the same walk round on their own, any time, at their own pace.

None of them is a room on the street, and none of them is ours to restyle: each is its maker’s, in their colours and their faces, with the street’s dial, sign-off and radio arriving as they do everywhere.

Bring one

If you are making something for one of our gatherings and would like it on the rack, tell us on the CB or in the forums, or in the Community Center. It comes in with your name on it, under the street’s licence, CC BY-SA 4.0, and with your say on how it looks. A link to a business of your own may go in it, signed as one.

The room is ours, drawn and written as code by Claude for Stimpunks. Every excursion on the rack is its maker’s, and its page says so. Type is Josefin Sans, by Santiago Orozco, and Public Sans, by the United States Web Design System, Dan Williams, Pablo Impallari and Rodrigo Fuenzalida.

Job marker — a brochure fallen out of the rack onto the floor

You have found a job marker. The Adventurer’s Guild is a shopfront on the street, and it posts jobs that send you round these rooms. Take the code below to its board and that job is done. Nothing here is scored, nothing expires, and one is a perfectly good number of jobs to do.

The job: What is in a brochure?

Before the code: An excursion is part room, part announcement and part what?

Hint 1

It is in the section headed What an excursion is.

Hint 2

It is the order a show runs in.

Give me the answer

The answer is Run of show. An excursion carries the way round on the night: the questions in order and the way out of every one of them. That is its run of show.

Taking the answer is a real way through this, not a lesser one. Nothing is watching and nothing is written down.
