The CB guide
The CB is the street’s radio: a chat channel patterned after citizens band radio, in a panel in the corner of every page. This guide goes through it part by part, top to bottom, with every button named the way the radio names it. To get on, go to the front desk at the Community Center; the house norms are there too, and Privacy says what the CB keeps. Last updated 2026-10-13.
THE SHORT VERSION
- Open is on, folded is off. Open, with the tab in front of you, the radio listens every four seconds. Folded, or behind another tab, it sends nothing.
- Ten messages a channel, gone at midnight, Colorado time. An eleventh pushes the oldest off.
- No alerts. No chime, no badge, no unread count, and the tab’s title never changes.
- Names, never numbers. A reaction says who pressed it, and Who’s online says who is around and where, and which rooms have somebody in their call. Nothing shows a count.
- Nothing on it moves, at any setting of the dial, and it is the same radio in every room.
Where it is
The radio sits in the bottom right corner of every page. Two places do not have it. The Healing Checkpoint and Stay Frosty each promise something the radio would break, so it waits outside their doors. The private rooms off the Town Hall show it only to the moderators each room is for. The Community Center has its own front desk instead of the bar, and once you sign on there the radio appears in the corner.
Before you sign on: the guest bar
Until you sign on, the corner holds a smaller bar. It is not the radio. It knows nothing about the channel and sends nothing to it, and the only thing it remembers is whether you left it open.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| CB | The radio’s name. |
| Teleport | Opens the teleporter, the same one the radio has. |
| Get on the CB | Opens a panel saying what the CB is and where the password comes from, with a form to sign on. It reads Fold away while the panel is open. |
| Your handle | The name you go by on the channel, up to 24 characters. |
| The community password, or your own if you have claimed your username | The community password is shared inside our community. Ask for it in the meeting hall. |
| Sign on | Checks the password and swaps this bar for the radio, on every page, until you sign off. |
The front desk at the Community Center has the same form, and one more: Forgotten the password for a username you claimed? It takes Your username, The recovery code, or a moderator’s reset code, A new password and The same again, then Set it and sign on.
The bar
Signed on, the bar runs along the top of the radio. You can drag the radio by any part of the bar that is not a button.
| Control | What it does | When folded |
|---|---|---|
| CB | The radio’s name, and somewhere to drag it by. | shown |
| Teleport | Opens the teleporter under the bar. | hidden |
| Move | Drag the bar to put the radio somewhere else. Or press Move: it takes the keyboard and says how it works, and then the arrow keys move the radio 24 pixels a press and Home puts it back in the corner. The radio remembers where you left it. | shown |
| Size | Opens a choice of Small, Normal and Large. Escape closes it. | hidden |
| Fold away | Folds the radio down to its bar and stops it. It reads Switch on while folded, and that opens it again. | reads Switch on |
Sizes, and folded
| State | What you see | Is it listening? |
|---|---|---|
| Small | The bar, the line saying what you are tuned to, and only the newest message. Good for keeping the radio on over a film. | yes, and it still reads new messages to a screen reader |
| Normal | Everything, in a narrow panel. | yes |
| Large | Everything, wider and taller, for long messages and pictures. | yes |
| Folded | Only CB, Move and Switch on. | no. It sends nothing, stops reading aloud, stops hosting and following a film, and stops you being seen. |
The radio is never wider or taller than your window. If it would cover a film’s play button when you are getting that film ready, it goes Small for the moment and says so; Size puts it back.
The parts of the radio
Under the bar the radio is in parts, top to bottom, each under a heading lettered on the case, with a groove in the case between one part and the next. A screen reader can move between the headings. Small shows none of them.
| Heading | What is under it |
|---|---|
| Where you are | The name of the room you are in, On the channel as and your handle, Be seen here, and Join this room’s call. |
| Who’s around | Who’s online, Join World call, and Show the call window while a call is in a window of its own. |
| Channel | World or this room, the messages, and the box to write in. |
| Watching together | Add my spot, Host this film and Screen a video. The part is only there while one of them is. |
| Your radio | The switches for a screen reader and for speaking aloud, Profile and Sign off, and links to the house norms and this guide. |
Where you are
At the top of the radio is the name of the room this page is, as the street names it, in the largest words on the radio: The Den, say, or The Street on the front page. It is where you are standing, which is not always the channel you are hearing: tuned to World, you hear the whole street from wherever you are. A page that is not a room says A page that is not a room on the street. Under the name, a line says On the channel as and your handle, then come Be seen here and, in a room when calls are switched on, Join this room’s call.
Be seen here
In a room, Be seen here, under Where you are, puts you, by your handle, on Who’s online for anybody signed on, with the room you are in, and shows you and anybody else who has switched it on in the same room to each other. In a room that keeps to itself it shows you only to people seen there. While it is off you are on nobody’s list; you can still open Who’s online, but not see who else is in this room or in its call.
- Also seen here: lists the others, alphabetically, by handle. Nobody else here is seen. means just that.
- In this room’s call: lists everybody in the room’s call, so you can see who is there before you join.
- Names only, and never a count. The lines update quietly, without announcing themselves.
- Your browser remembers the switch. Folding the radio, leaving the page or putting the tab behind another takes you out of sight.
Who’s around
Who’s online opens two lists. While it is open they are redrawn every few seconds, quietly, and neither shows a number. Beside it, Join World call opens the World call.
- People: everybody who has switched on Be seen here, in alphabetical order, with BASE or CLAIMED beside a name the way the channel marks it, the avatar a claimed username wears, if it wears one, and the room each is in. A screen reader hears an avatar as what its owner wrote about it, or not at all. A name opens that person’s profile under the list, the same as pressing a handle on the channel, and a room’s name takes you there. Your own line says (you), and a line under the list says whether you are on it.
- Calls going now: the World call, while somebody is in it, then every room whose call has somebody in it, in walking order, and a room’s name takes you there. It names the room and nothing else. Who is in a call is shown in its room, to anybody seen there. This list appears once 8x8 is telling us who is in calls.
- A room that keeps to itself is never on either list, and a room the base keeps is named only to the people it is for.
Tuning: World or this room
Under Channel, two buttons choose what you hear:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| World | The channel the whole street shares. A new radio starts here, and tuned to World the radio never says which room you are in. |
| This room | The channel of the room you are standing in. Walk into another room and you hear that room’s channel instead. Pages that are not rooms do not have one. |
A line above the messages says Tuned to World or Tuned to the room’s name. Every channel keeps the same rules: ten messages, gone at midnight. A quiet one says Nobody has said anything today.
Reading messages
Each message starts with a line: the sender’s handle, a mark if it has one, and the time it was sent, by your clock. Then come its words, a picture or sticker if it has one, and its reactions.
| Part | What it means or does |
|---|---|
| The handle | A button. Press it to see that person’s profile: their handle with its mark, the avatar they wear, large and first, then their other avatars and their pets, if they have chosen to show them. Press an avatar to open it larger, as large as the window allows; Close, Escape or a press outside it puts it away. Close or Escape puts it away. A name on Who’s online opens the same profile. |
| CLAIMED | Sent from a claimed username, which only signs on with its owner’s own password. Only the server can put this mark there. |
| BASE | Sent by one of our moderators. Only the server can put this mark there either. A handle with neither mark is whatever somebody typed. |
| Copy | Puts the message’s words on your own clipboard, as they were typed. It reads Copied for a moment. |
| React | Opens the reactions under the message. |
| Take off | Only on messages you sent. Takes the message off the air for everybody, with its picture, sticker and reactions, and puts the keyboard back in the message box. It cannot be put back. A message marked CLAIMED comes off only for that username’s own password, and one marked BASE only for the base. |
| A picture | Press it to see it larger, with Download and Close. Download under it keeps a copy on your device. |
| A sticker | A drawing of the sender’s pet, with its name. It goes when its message goes. |
Links in a message. An address on this street is an ordinary link. An address on another site, written with https://, opens in a new tab and has an arrow and the site’s name after it, like ↗ example.com, so you can see where it goes before you press it. A room written as #the-den shows as #The Den, linked. A time like @34:12 is a button that moves your own film to that place: see watching together.
It never scrolls under you. If you have scrolled up to read, new messages wait at the bottom. The radio follows them only when you were already at the bottom, or when you have just transmitted.
Reactions
React opens a row of quick reactions: a heart, thumbs up, laughing, a party, eyes, sparkles, a penguin for a pebble, a dog, a cat, an otter, a rainbow, a unicorn, the sign of the horns, a hedgehog, a hugging face, people hugging, and a crying face. Under them, Or any emoji takes one emoji of your own from your system’s emoji picker (Control, Command and Space on a Mac, the emoji key on a phone, Windows and . on Windows), and its own React button sends it.
Under the message, each reaction shows the handles of everybody who pressed it, alphabetically, and never a number. Press a reaction there to add yours, or to take yours back.
Writing a message
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Your message | The box. Up to 2,000 characters, and it keeps your lines. It grows as you type, and you can drag its corner to make it taller. |
| Picture | Adds a screenshot or a photo. See pictures. |
| Sticker | Shows your avatars, then your pets. Press one to send a sticker of it to the channel straight away; what is in the box stays there. No avatars yet? Draw one at the Bodymind Booth. No pets yet? Adopt one at Rescue A Cat or Rescue A Dog. |
| Transmit | Sends the message, with its picture if it has one. |
| Keys in the box | What they do |
|---|---|
| Enter | Transmits, unless the list of rooms is open. |
| Shift and Enter | Starts a new line. |
| # and the start of a room’s name | Opens a list of rooms. ↑ and ↓ move through it, Enter or Tab picks one, and Escape leaves your # as you typed it. |
Answers from the radio, like Transmitting… or No signal. That did not go out., appear in one line just above the box. If you send more than twelve messages in a minute it asks you to wait a moment.
Markdown
A little Markdown works, and the radio builds it into the page as text, never as code.
| Type | You get |
|---|---|
**bold** | bold |
*italic* or _italic_ | italic. A single _ inside a word, as in snake_case, stays as typed. |
~~struck~~ | struck through |
`code` | code, with nothing inside it changed |
| Three backticks on a line of their own, before and after | a block of code |
> at the start of a line | a quote |
-, * or 1. at the start of a line | a list |
| A blank line | a new paragraph |
There are no headings, images or HTML, and a link’s words are always its address, so [words](an address) stays exactly as you typed it.
Pictures
Press Picture and choose a screenshot or a photo. The radio redraws it in your browser before it goes, which takes off where it was taken and everything else the camera wrote into it. Then:
- Say what is in it, if you like is a description, up to 280 characters. It is offered, never required, and it is what a screen reader hears.
- Remove the picture takes it off the message.
- It goes with your next Transmit, with words or without. It is deleted when its message goes, and one you never send is deleted within the hour.
Pictures on the channel have no public address. Only people signed on can see them, and the same norm as a screenshot applies to passing one on.
Your radio
The last part of the radio is for you and the radio itself, rather than a room or a film. Join this room’s call is under Where you are, and Add my spot, Host this film and Screen a video are under Watching together.
| Control | What it does | Shown |
|---|---|---|
| New messages to a screen reader: on | New messages are announced to a screen reader as they arrive, at every size. Press to switch it off. | always |
| Speak new messages aloud: off | Press to have the radio read each new message out in your own device’s voice, handle first, with a burst of static before and after; at the Gentle setting, the words without the static. It never reads your own messages or what was already there. | when your device has a voice |
| Clear the channel | Clears the channel you are tuned to. See what moderators see. | to moderators |
| Profile | Opens your username, your avatars and your pets. | always |
| Sign off | Signs you off and takes the radio away, on every page, until you sign on again. | always |
With both New messages to a screen reader and Speak new messages aloud on, a screen reader user hears everything twice. At the foot of the radio are links to the house norms and to this guide.
The teleporter
Teleport opens a box labelled Teleport to a room, or to @somebody and a list of every room on the street, in walking order. The room you are in says you are here; the others show their #tag.
- Type to narrow it. It finds rooms whose names start with what you typed, then rooms with it inside a word of their name, so fire finds The Campfire, then rooms whose own description uses the word, with a few of those words shown.
- ↑ and ↓ move through the list, Enter goes to the room highlighted, and Escape puts the box away.
- Going is ordinary navigation. Nothing is sent to the channel, and nobody learns where you went.
- An @ looks for a person. Type @ and the list becomes the people on Who’s online, one line for each room they are in; type some of a handle to narrow it, and Enter goes to the room highlighted. Handles that start with what you typed come first. You are left out of it, and the letters you type are not sent anywhere.
To search the words on every page rather than the rooms’ names, use the search box on the front page or the map.
Watching together
When people watch the same film in a room, each person plays their own copy and pauses when they like. These help everybody find the same place. On the radio, Add my spot and Host this film are under the heading Watching together once a film on the page has started, and so is Screen a video, for moderators, on a page with a screen; the heading is only there while one of them is. Catch up and Follow are on the readout, beside a host.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| An @time in a message | Type @ and a time, like @34:12 or @1:02:03. Everybody sees it as a button that moves the film on their own page to that place. It never presses play. If the spot names a film or a room, it only moves that film in that room; anywhere else it says where the spot is. A time without the @ stays words. |
| Add my spot | Writes the @time for you, with the film and the room. |
| Host this film | Everybody on the channel sees where you are in your film, whether it is playing, and in which room. In a room that keeps to itself, only radios tuned to that room’s channel see it. One person hosts a room at a time. Putting your tab behind another pauses it; folding the radio or leaving the page stops it. |
| Catch up | Beside a host in your room: moves your film to where they are now. |
| Follow | Beside a host in your room: keeps your film in step with theirs, at your own volume. Pausing your own film, or pressing Follow again, stops following, so a break is always fine. |
| Screen a video | For moderators. Paste the address of one YouTube video, from youtube.com or youtu.be, and press Put it up: it plays on the page’s first screen, from the time in the address if it has one, in place of what the screen had. It is on your page only. Press Host this film once it plays, and everybody who presses Catch up or Follow beside you gets its play button on their own screen, with how long it runs, waiting for their press. The button under the screen puts back what was there. On a set you tune, like the Solarpunk Hermitage’s television, Looming Rocks’ stage or the Rebellion Rave Room’s big screen, it is tuned on the set instead, which stays off until they press play, and the set’s own controls tune back to its listing. A playlist’s address is refused. |
A spot’s room is a link. Following it takes you to the film’s play button, ready to start at that place when you press it. Nobody’s film moves unless they press something themselves.
Calls
Every room has a voice and video call, run by 8x8. Join this room’s call on the radio opens it, and some rooms have a panel of their own that says Join the call as and your handle. A few rooms at Cavendish Coworking also let in people who are not signed on: they type The name you want to be called in the call and press Knock on the door.
To find a call with people in it, open Who’s online: Calls going now names the World call and every room whose call has somebody in it.
The World call is one call for the whole street. Join World call, under Who’s around, opens it from any page with the radio, in the same window as a room’s call, and press it again to leave. Anybody signed on can join; a guest cannot. You are in one call at a time, so joining the World call leaves the room’s call, and the other way round. Like every call it hangs up when you leave the page, and that includes going to another room, because every room is a page of its own, unless you pop it out into a window of its own. Nobody is shown who is in it before they join.
The call opens in a window of its own in the bottom left corner.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| CALL and the room’s name | Which call this is. |
| Move | Drag the bar, or press Move and use the arrow keys; Home puts it back in its corner. |
| Pop out | Moves the call into a window of its own, which stays open while you go from room to room. Not at Small, where there is no room for it on the bar. |
| Small, Large | Make the window smaller or larger. Press again to go back to the middle size. |
| Leave the call | Hangs up. Leaving the page hangs up too, unless the call is in a window of its own. |
| In the call now: | Who is in the call, if you have Be seen here on and the radio open. |
Inside the window is 8x8’s own screen. Your browser may ask about your camera and microphone so it can show a preview, but both start off, and nothing goes to the call until you join there. Folding the radio leaves the call running.
A call that follows you: Pop out
Every room is a page of its own, and going to another room closes the page you were on, with its call. To keep a call while you walk about the street, press Pop out on the call’s window. The call moves into a browser window of its own and stays there while you go from room to room in the window you came from.
- You join again in the new window. A call cannot be carried from one window to another without starting over, so the new window opens on 8x8’s first screen, camera and microphone off, and you press Join there.
- The radio knows where it is. On every page, the call’s button stays pressed: Join World call for the World call, and Join this room’s call when you are back in the room it came from. Show the call window, under Who’s around, brings the window to the front. Pressing the call’s pressed button hangs up and closes the window.
- Still one call at a time. Popping out another call puts it in the same window in place of the first, and joining a call in a page hangs up the one in the window.
- Leave the call in the window hangs up and closes it, and so does closing the window.
- The window has no radio in it, so it does not show who is in a room’s call before you join; the radio in the room still does, to anybody seen there.
- Your browser has to let stimpunks.world open a window. If it will not, the call’s window says so and the call stays where it was. On a phone the window is another tab, and a phone may stop the camera or microphone of a tab that is not in front.
Profile
Profile opens a tray with three parts.
Your username
- Claiming. An unclaimed handle can be used by anybody with the community password. Type A password of your own and The same again, then Claim and your handle. From then on only your own password signs on as it, and your messages carry CLAIMED. There is no email.
- The recovery code is shown once, when you claim. It is the way back in if you forget your password, at the front desk. Keep it, then press I have kept it. A moderator can also give you a reset code.
- Change my password asks for Your password now, A new password and The same again, then Change it. Every other device signed on as you is signed off.
- Delete my account asks for your password, then Yes, delete my account or Keep it. It cannot be undone.
- Five wrong passwords lock a claimed username for fifteen minutes.
Your avatars
- Every avatar you have kept, from the Bodymind Booth or the Dress-Up Den, with its drawing, its name and what you wrote about it, which is all a screen reader hears for it.
- Wear it on the CB shows that one beside your name on Who’s online, and large in your profile, and Take it off the CB shows none. One at a time; change whenever you like. It needs a claimed username.
- Show my avatars on the CB shows the rest in your profile too, the one you wear first, with their names and what you wrote. It needs a claimed username, and it starts off.
- Name it and say what it shows gives it a name and your own words for it, then Save or Leave it as it is. Dress it at the Den and Change it in the booth take it back to be changed. Delete it asks first, with Yes, delete it or Keep it.
Your pets
- Every pet you have adopted, with its drawing, its name and when you adopted it. Rename or Name them gives one a name; the name it came in under is kept on the list of everybody adopted.
- Show my pets on the CB lets anybody on the CB press your handle, on the channel or on Who’s online, and see them. It needs a claimed username, and it starts off.
- Forget me deletes everything the street keeps under your handle: your avatars, your pets and whether they are shown. It asks first, with Yes, forget me or Keep them. The animals stay on the list of everybody adopted, with nothing connecting them to you.
What moderators see
Our moderators sign on as the base station, and their messages carry BASE. They also have Take off on every message, not only their own, which takes it off the air, and Clear the channel, which clears the channel they are tuned to. In a call, the base is the only one who can record or turn on transcription, and the house norms ask them to say so first. If something is wrong, tell the base.
Keys at a glance
| Where | Keys |
|---|---|
| Anywhere on the radio | Tab moves between controls. Escape closes whatever panel is open and puts you back on the button that opened it. |
| Move, on the radio or a call | Press it, then the arrow keys move the window; Home puts it back in its corner. |
| The message box | Enter transmits; Shift and Enter starts a new line; # opens the list of rooms. |
| A list of rooms | ↑ and ↓ move; Enter picks or goes; Escape closes it. |
| A large picture | Escape or Close. |
What it sends and keeps
In short: the radio asks this site, and nothing else, for the channel while it is open and in front of you. The channel keeps ten messages, until midnight. No IP address is stored, nothing anybody types is logged, and the only list of who is on is Who’s online, made from Be seen here and gone thirty seconds after somebody stops being seen. Your browser keeps your handle, your pass and where you put the radio. Privacy has the whole of it, and Architecture says how it is built.
HOW LOUD DO YOU WANT IT?
Starts wherever your device says. Nothing moves, flashes, or plays until you say so.
